Violence at work is more common than you might think! Read on to find out more.

Assault can happen anywhere and at any time, and the workplace is no exception to this rule. However, few of us truly recognise how widespread this problem has become. There are some shocking statistics associated with instances of assault, violence and threats during work hours and on work premises.

violence at work

According to the Crime Survey for England and Wales, there were an estimated 649,000 incidents of violence at workplaces in England and Wales between 2012 and 2013. Of these, 332,000 were actual assaults and another 317,000 were threats. 51 percent of assault cases resulted in injuries, such as black eyes or minor bruising. A worrying 24 percent of the victims surveyed reported that they had experienced three or more incidents of workplace violence. Strangers tend to be the biggest offenders when it comes to work-related assaults and incidents of violence, and are responsible for 60 percent of such cases. Assaults were often related to the consumption of drugs or alcohol.

Sadly, these are only the reported cases, which means that there may be unreported instances of workplace violence taking place across the United Kingdom. The results of violence and assault on work premises are not pretty. Morale decreases and productivity begins to suffer as a culture of fear takes hold in the workplace. Those who have experienced repeated threats or a physical attack may find it impossible to function normally.
