What should you do if, as a cyclist, you are involved in a road traffic accident with a vehicle:

  1. Seek medical assistance from your GP or from Accident and Emergency. Your mental and physical health is the most important elements. Any compensation claim is a secondary consideration.
  2. Take photographs (using your phone) and/or video of the accident location – the layout, lighting and weather are all important factors.
  3. Inform the police as soon as possible – they may investigate the accident and see if a criminal offence has been committed. If the police pursue the matter against the other driver, then there is a much higher chance that the other driver’s insurers will admit liability (blame) quickly.
  4. Take insurance and contact details from the driver of the vehicle.
  5. Record the vehicle registration number, make, model and colours of the negligent driver, vehicle.
  6. Take names and contact details of any witnesses.
  7. Write everything down, so that you don’t forget any relevant details. Particularly focus on what happened and what symptoms you have.
  8. Contact a specialist personal injury solicitor, who has expertise in cycling claims, as soon as possible to obtain a No Win, No Fee agreement.
  9. Replace your helmet but keep the damaged helmet as evidence for the police or for your personal injury claim.
  10. Take photographs of your injuries as they progress.
  11. Take photos of your damaged bike and other damaged items.

Happy cycling and stay safe.
