Advance Decisions (Living Wills) from AM Davies, in partnership with Truth Legal
An Advance Decision is a way of refusing certain kinds of medical treatment if they become necessary in future. As a patient, you will always have the right to refuse medical treatment if you choose, but if you are unable to make your wishes known at the time, things can get a lot more uncertain. An Advance Decision can overcome these problems and make the situation much clearer.
Advance Decisions are sometimes also called ‘living wills’ as they set out what you would like to happen in the future. However, unlike wills, Advance Decisions only relate to specific medical situations.
Making an Advance Decision through A M Davies Solicitors
Advance Decisions are very personal matters. Not only do they have to be well drafted and compliant to have the full legal effect you intend, they also need to be handled with sensitivity, and with an understanding of your individual situation. A M Davies Solicitors is ideally placed to provide this personalised service, with the full backing of our legal expertise.
If you would like to chat with us about making an Advance Decision, please contact Jeremy at A M Davies Solicitors.
Why might you make an Advance Decision?
You could make an Advance Decision when you feel strongly that certain kinds of medical treatment do not fit in with your beliefs or ethics. Alternatively, you might not like the thought of undergoing certain treatments. Provided it is valid, an Advance Decision will be legally binding on the medical professionals who are treating you.
An Advance Decision can also offer comfort and certainty to your friends and family. It means they will know your wishes regarding the treatment in question, and also removes the burden from your loved ones of having to make a choice for you.
Examples of treatment you might refuse include:
- Blood transfusions
- Organ transplants
- Clinically assisted nutrition
- Life-sustaining treatment
